BACKSTORY
On a snowy day in 1934 employees William Cogbill and William Jones left the State Planters Bank in downtown Richmond to make a deposit at the Federal Reserve Bank, located 3 blocks away. The men left on foot, Cogbill armed with a pistol and carrying $60,000 in small bills in a satchel. As they approached an alley on 9th Street, a dark sedan abruptly pulled out of the alley. Three men dressed in suits, ties and topcoats got out of the car. Producing guns from their coats, the dapper thieves took Cogbill’s gun and the satchel of money, got back into the car and sped off. The heist took less than a minute. While the getaway car was found a few weeks later, the $60K, worth more than $1.1 million today, was never recovered. No arrests were made and the crime was never solved.
