Backstory

Edgar Allan Poe published his only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, while living in Richmond in 1838. In the book, Pym gets stranded in a lifeboat with 4 other men after their ship sinks, and they resort to cannibalism to prevent starvation, eating fictional crew member Richard Parker. In 1884, 46 years after the book was written, the British yacht Mignonette sank on its way to Australia, leaving the 4 man crew stranded in a lifeboat. On the 19th day adrift, starving and with no water, they killed and ate one of the crew members to stay alive. The crew member’s name was Richard Parker.
