BACKSTORY

In 1871, when work began on the 4,000 foot tunnel below the neighborhood of Church Hill, it is said to have awakened evil underneath. On October 2, 1925 locomotive 231 with ten flat cars was nearing the western portal when the tunnel suddenly collapsed, burying the train and rail workers inside. Some of the men were able to crawl under flat cars and escape out the eastern end of the tunnel. However, rail workers Benjamin Mosby and Thomas Mason died as a result, while the bodies of at least two other men were never recovered. To this day, the remains of rail workers Richard Lewis and H. Smith along with locomotive 231 reside under Church Hill; entombed.
