BACKSTORY

As the resonant tones of the pipe organ fade, the house lights go down and the audience gets quiet. The red velvet curtain goes up and the evening’s feature begins on the big screen. But there is an uninvited guest. Robert Coulter was the General Manager of the Byrd Theater from opening day on Christmas Eve in 1928, until he was forced to retire in 1971. But since his death in 1978, employees have reported Coulter’s ghost haunting the theater. Sometimes seen as a spectral man in a suit walking the aisles, other times a reflection in the projection booth, but most commonly seen sitting alone in what was Mr. Coulter's favorite seat on the second row of the center balcony. So the next time you catch a show at the Byrd, with popcorn in hand as the theater gets dark, look around. There may be a ghost in the gallery.
