BACKSTORY
In 1817, fourteen year old Daniel Denoon was apprenticed to respected Richmond gunsmith James McNaught. By age 20, Denoon's gun work had surpassed McNaught’s, leading Denoon to strike out on his own. At a dinner during which he shared his plans with McNaught, Denoon was summoned upstairs. McNaught with a pistol in each hand, used one on Denoon and the other on himself. Denoon made it down the stairs and was able to describe the incident before dying on the staircase. The building still stands at the corner of 18th and Franklin. Multiple attempts to repair the staircase have been inexplicably unsuccessful. Subsequent owners have reported hearing two men shouting upstairs and the sounds of someone staggering down the staircase when the building is otherwise empty. Daniel Denoon is buried at St. John's Church.
