BACKSTORY
Eliza Arnold debuted on stage in 1796 at 9 years old. Married at 15 and widowed at 18, she resumed acting in Richmond, where she met her second husband, David Poe, Jr. The couple had 3 children, William, Edgar, and Rosalie. Eliza returned to Richmond in 1810, performing at the Richmond Theatre until she became gravely ill. She died of Tuberculosis in November of 1811 at 24 years old. Partly in her honor, Eliza’s theater troupe postponed their December 23rd show to the fateful night of the 26th, when the theater caught fire during the show and burned to the ground, killing 72 people. Eliza’s 3 children were split up; William to family in Baltimore, Rosalie to a couple in Richmond, and Edgar to John and Frances Allan, also of Richmond. Eliza Poe is buried at St. John’s in Church Hill.
